The Caring Tradition Fund

The Martha Jefferson Caring Tradition has been a hallmark of this hospital and a commitment we have made to every patient since our founding in 1903.  The Caring Tradition defines compassion, respect, and kindness throughout one's healthcare experience at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, augmenting excellent, safe and personalized care.

The Caring Tradition Fund helps make possible numerous thoughtful and personal touches to provide this margin of excellence while reducing anxiety and lending comfort to patients, including programs such as:

  • Resiliency programs for nurses and clinical staff;
  • Acts of Kindness, a signature program that enables staff to provide a small gift shop item for a patient who needs a little extra encouragement or support;
  • Caring Always Cart, which provides inpatients at no charge with lip balm, sleep masks, puzzles, books, and even a teddy bear;
  • Support for hospital volunteer recognition and programming;
  • Purchase of glider chairs for pediatric rooms so parents can comfort children having surgery;
  • Massage therapy for patients;
  • The Melton T. and Muriel Haney Volunteer Center, a dedicated space for our nearly 300 annual volunteers to gather, rest, and get organized;
  • Support of the Patient Family Advisory Council, who provide guidance to hospital programs and special Foundation-supported grants

Philanthropic Need:

  • $100,000 in annual program support
  • $2 million endowment
