Palliative Care Medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on improving and maintaining quality of life for patients with complex or serious illness. Palliative care offers a lifeline as people attempt to navigate through uncharted territory providing:
- relief of distressing symptoms such as shortness of breath, pain, anxiety, and spiritual or emotional suffering;
- information to help people accurately understand their condition and options;
- choices to enable people to set their goals for treatment and make decisions about care, to advocate for their goals and ensure that their values and beliefs guide their care; and
- continuity with familiar people working with patients and families day after day as they move from one unit to another or are re-admitted.
